Who Is the SkyTrak+ For?

The SkyTrak+ is the golf simulator I'd recommend to most people asking "what should I get for a home setup?" It's not the most accurate system money can buy — the Foresight GC3 is better on that metric. It's not the most portable — the FlightScope Mevo+ has that. But it does more things well at this price point than anything else on the market, and it does them in a way that makes sense for a dedicated home simulator room.

If you're a serious amateur golfer who wants to practice meaningfully in the off-season, play virtual rounds when weather doesn't cooperate, and have a system you'll actually use long-term, the SkyTrak+ is almost certainly the right call.

How the Camera-Radar Hybrid Works

This is actually the most interesting part of the SkyTrak+ story. Pure camera systems (like the GC3) photograph the ball in the milliseconds after impact and measure the actual dimple rotation to determine spin. Pure radar systems (like the Mevo+ or R10) use Doppler radar to track the ball in flight and calculate spin from the flight path.

The SkyTrak+ does both. The camera captures ball data at impact; the radar tracks the ball in flight. The combination gives you more reliable spin data than radar alone — especially on wedge shots and anything with heavy curvature — without requiring the controlled lighting environment that a pure camera system demands.

In practice, this means the SkyTrak+ is meaningfully more accurate indoors with reasonable lighting than radar-only systems, while being more forgiving of imperfect conditions than pure camera systems. It's a genuine engineering compromise that works.

Shot Metrics

The SkyTrak+ captures 8 primary shot metrics:

  • Club Speed
  • Ball Speed
  • Launch Angle
  • Spin Rate
  • Spin Axis
  • Side Spin
  • Vertical Launch Angle (VLA)
  • Horizontal Launch Angle (HLA)

That's a complete picture of what the ball is doing. For game improvement work, this is everything you need. It tells you not just how far the ball went, but why — which is what matters for actual improvement.

Setup and Placement

Let me be direct about this: the SkyTrak+ takes some fussing to set up correctly, and most reviews skip this part. It goes on the floor to the side of the ball, positioned about 6–8 inches from the ball line. Placement matters — get it wrong and your data gets weird.

More importantly, lighting matters. The camera component needs consistent, diffused light. Overhead fluorescent lighting in a finished basement is ideal. A garage with windows letting in afternoon sun is not ideal. If you're planning a garage setup and have windows you can't control, add blackout blinds to your budget. It's a minor expense that meaningfully improves data consistency.

The 10×10 minimum is a real minimum, not a comfortable floor. A 12×12 hitting area is more comfortable for full swings, especially with a driver. Measure carefully before buying.

Software Options

This is where the SkyTrak+ genuinely shines compared to competitors. The software ecosystem is broad:

  • E6 Connect — the gold standard for virtual course play. 100,000+ hole library, multiplayer, practice ranges. Requires E6 subscription in addition to SkyTrak+ subscription.
  • TGC2 (The Golf Club 2019) — excellent course graphics, active course designer community, player-created courses. The best visual experience of the major simulators.
  • WGT Golf — browser-based, lighter on hardware requirements, good for casual play.
  • SkyTrak Game Improvement Plan — the native SkyTrak app with practice modes, skills challenges, driving range.

The Subscription Situation

The SkyTrak+ subscription is the most common complaint, and it's a legitimate one. The device itself is $2,995. Then:

  • Practice Plan ($99/yr) — basic practice modes, driving range, skills assessments. No simulator course play.
  • Full Simulator Plan ($199/yr) — unlocks E6 Connect integration, TGC2 compatibility, full game modes, multiplayer.

If you want an actual simulator experience — not just a launch monitor — budget $199/yr for the subscription. That's $995 over five years, which is real money. Factor it into your total cost of ownership calculation. Over five years, the true cost of the SkyTrak+ system is closer to $4,000.

Real-World Accuracy

I've compared the SkyTrak+ readings to on-course data tracked with GPS, and to Trackman readings at a local fitting studio. The honest assessment:

For full shots with irons and woods — ball speed, carry distance, launch angle — the SkyTrak+ is very good. Numbers are consistently within 1–3% of measured reality, which for game improvement purposes is essentially perfect.

For wedge shots with heavy spin — this is where you feel the limitations relative to a pure camera system. Spin rates on 80-yard finesse wedge shots are less reliable than on full swings. Not bad, but noticeably less precise than the GC3 would be.

For driver — excellent. Launch angle, ball speed, and spin are all very consistent, which matters for the shots where you most want reliable data.

Weaknesses Worth Knowing

  • Lighting sensitivity — mentioned above, worth repeating. This is the most common frustration among SkyTrak+ users who set it up in non-ideal environments.
  • Outdoor use is limited — the camera component doesn't play nice with direct sunlight. This is fundamentally not an outdoor unit.
  • Subscription cost — ongoing, real, worth budgeting for.
  • Setup fussiness — more placement-sensitive than radar systems. Takes time to dial in initially.

The Verdict

The SkyTrak+ is the best all-around home golf simulator at its price point. It delivers on accuracy for full shots, supports the best software ecosystem in the category, and provides enough data to meaningfully improve your game. The subscription cost is real, the lighting sensitivity is real, and the outdoor limitations are real. None of that is disqualifying for the right application.

Build it into a proper indoor setup with controlled lighting, add the full simulator subscription, connect it to E6 Connect or TGC2, and you have a legitimate simulator that you'll use for years.
